Spain - Rioja, Priorat & Rías Baixas

From the rolling vineyards of Rioja to the rugged hills of Priorat and the Atlantic coast of Galicia, Spain is a land of extraordinary wine, culture, and tradition.

Discovering Spain

Every month, Lakeland Wine Club takes us on a new journey. While Italy will always be at the heart of my story, I also enjoy exploring other great wine regions that have shaped the world of wine.

This month, we're traveling to Spain, a country where ancient traditions meet modern winemaking. From the elegant reds of Rioja to the dramatic slate vineyards of Priorat and the fresh Atlantic influence of Galicia, each region tells its own story through the glass.

Rather than trying to discover all of Spain in one visit, I've selected three wines that represent three very different landscapes, climates, and winemaking philosophies. Together, they offer a wonderful introduction to the richness and diversity of Spanish wine.

Rioja – Spain's Timeless Classic

Rioja is Spain's most famous wine region and one of the world's great destinations for wine lovers. Located in northern Spain along the Ebro River, Rioja benefits from a unique combination of Atlantic and Mediterranean influences, creating ideal conditions for producing elegant, age-worthy wines.

The region is best known for Tempranillo, a grape that expresses red fruit, spice and remarkable balance. Rioja's tradition of aging wines in oak barrels has become one of its defining characteristics, producing wines that are refined, approachable, and incredibly food-friendly.

Priorat – A Land of Slate and Character

Tucked away in the rugged hills of Catalonia, Priorat is one of Spain's most prestigious wine regions. Its steep vineyards are planted on distinctive black slate soils, known locally as llicorella, which force the vines to grow deep in search of water and nutrients.

The result is wines of remarkable concentration, minerality, and complexity.

Every vineyard tells a story of perseverance, where generations of winemakers have transformed a challenging landscape into one of Spain's most respected wine regions.

"Priorat proves that extraordinary wines are often born in the most demanding landscapes."

Rías Baixas – Where the Ocean Meets the Vineyard

Located in Galicia on Spain's northwestern Atlantic coast, Rías Baixas is home to Albariño, one of Spain's most celebrated white grape varieties. Cool ocean breezes, frequent rainfall, and granite-rich soils create wines that are vibrant, aromatic, and wonderfully refreshing.

The region's close connection to the sea makes Albariño a natural companion for seafood, reflecting the freshness and elegance of the Atlantic coastline.

"Every glass of Albariño captures the freshness of the ocean and the spirit of Galicia."

The Flavors of Spain

Spain's cuisine is as diverse as its wine regions, shaped by mountains, coastlines, and centuries of culinary tradition. Every region has its own specialties, but one thing remains the same: meals are meant to be shared with family and friends around the table.

From the seafood of Galicia to the slow-cooked dishes of Rioja and the bold flavors of Catalonia, Spanish food celebrates fresh ingredients, simple preparation, and unforgettable hospitality. Just like its wines, every meal tells the story of the land and the people who call it home.

More Than Wine

One of the reasons I enjoy exploring Spain is how each region reflects its landscape and culture.

Rioja offers centuries of tradition.

Priorat showcases determination and resilience through its dramatic vineyards.

Rías Baixas reminds us how the ocean can shape both a region and its wines.

Although these wines come from different corners of Spain, they share the same passion for craftsmanship, hospitality, and bringing people together around the table.
