Campi Flegrei: Wine Born from Fire

Discovering Il Quarto Miglio and the Volcanic Wines of Campania

Just west of Naples lies one of Italy’s most fascinating and unusual wine landscapes:

Campi Flegrei, the “Phlegraean Fields.”

This is not simply wine country. It is a living volcanic landscape shaped by ancient craters, mineral-rich soils, the influence of the Mediterranean Sea, and thousands of years of viticultural history.

Here, vines grow in sandy volcanic soils composed of ash and other volcanic material.

These conditions have also helped preserve something increasingly rare in European viticulture: vines cultivated a piede franco — on their own roots, without American rootstock.

For wine lovers, Campi Flegrei offers an opportunity to taste wines that are inseparable from the place where they were born.

A Vineyard Between Volcano and Sea

Campi Flegrei surrounds a complex volcanic area west of Naples. The vineyards are fragmented among hillsides, ancient craters and communities that have cultivated vines for generations.

Two native grapes are particularly important here: Falanghina and Piedirosso.

Falanghina from the Campi Flegrei can produce energetic, savory white wines, often characterized by citrus, freshness and a distinctive mineral and saline personality.

Piedirosso gives an entirely different expression of the same territory. Naturally floral and spicy, it can produce remarkably agile reds, with red and dark fruit, peppery notes and the smoky character associated with the area's volcanic soils.

These aren't wines that need enormous concentration to make an impression.

Their identity comes from freshness, minerality, fragrance and place.

Il Quarto Miglio

Located in Quarto, in the province of Naples, Il Quarto Miglio is deeply connected to the viticultural traditions of the Campi Flegrei.

The winery traces its modern brand to 2004, while the Verde family's relationship with viticulture extends across generations. Its stated mission is to preserve and promote the native varieties and viticultural traditions of this remarkable territory.

The winery works particularly with

Falanghina and Piedirosso,

combining traditional practices with modern cellar technology.

But what makes the story particularly interesting to us is not technology.

It is the vineyard.

It is the volcanic earth.

It is the survival of vines growing on their own roots.

And ultimately, it is how all of those elements find their way into the glass.

Why Campi Flegrei Matters

Italy's most famous wine regions are familiar to almost everyone: Tuscany, Piedmont, Veneto.

But some of the country's most exciting wine stories are found away from those famous names.

Campi Flegrei is one of them.

The combination of active volcanic geology, sandy soils, maritime influence, indigenous varieties and ungrafted vines makes this tiny area unlike almost anywhere else in Italy.

The wines don't simply tell us what Falanghina or Piedirosso tastes like.

They tell us what Campi Flegrei tastes like.

And that is exactly the type of discovery Lakeland Wine Club was created to share.

From Campania to Lakeland

This October, we are bringing that story to Florida.

Lakeland Wine Club will host a special evening dedicated to Campi Flegrei and Il Quarto Miglio, featuring five wines and three traditional Neapolitan-inspired pairings.

It will be an opportunity to move beyond simply tasting wine and explore the landscape, grapes, traditions and people behind every glass.

From volcanic Falanghina and Piedirosso to Gragnano and Aglianico, we'll travel through one of Campania's most distinctive wine cultures without leaving Lakeland.

Five wines. Three pairings. One volcanic territory.

Welcome to Campi Flegrei.
