Discovering Puglia: Italy's Sun-Drenched Wine Paradise

Lakeland Wine Club – Region of the Month, June 2026

Welcome to Puglia

Alberobello - Trulli
Alberobello - Trulli

When most people think of Italian wine, they immediately picture Tuscany or Piedmont.

But some of Italy's most exciting wines come from much farther south.

Puglia, located in the heel of Italy's boot, is a region of sunshine, ancient olive groves, crystal-clear coastlines, and vineyards that have been producing wine for thousands of years.

As an Italian sommelier, I have always appreciated Puglia for its authenticity. It is a place where food, wine, family, and hospitality remain deeply connected to everyday life.

That is why we selected Puglia as this month's featured region for Lakeland Wine Club.

Where Is Puglia?

Puglia sits between two seas:

  • Adriatic Sea

  • Ionian Sea

The region enjoys:

  • Over 300 days of sunshine annually

  • Warm Mediterranean temperatures

  • Cooling coastal breezes

  • Limestone-rich soils

These natural conditions create ideal vineyards and help produce rich, expressive wines.

The Grapes That Define Puglia

Primitivo

Primitivo is undoubtedly Puglia's most famous grape variety.

Known for its bold fruit flavors and smooth texture, Primitivo offers aromas of:

  • Blackberry

  • Black cherry

  • Plum

  • Vanilla

  • Sweet spice

The grape shares a genetic connection with Zinfandel, making it familiar to many American wine lovers.

One of the most prestigious expressions comes from Primitivo di Manduria,

an area that produces some of the richest and most concentrated wines in southern Italy.

Negroamaro

Another important grape of Puglia is Negroamaro.

The name translates roughly to "black and bitter," but don't let that fool you.

These wines are beautifully balanced and incredibly food-friendly.

Typical flavors include:

  • Dark berries

  • Black cherry

  • Mediterranean herbs

  • Tobacco

  • Earthy spice

Negroamaro wines often display a rustic elegance that perfectly reflects the character of southern Italy.

Susumaniello

Once nearly forgotten, Susumaniello is experiencing a remarkable revival.

This indigenous grape produces wines with vibrant fruit, freshness, and complexity.

It is becoming one of the most exciting discoveries for wine enthusiasts seeking something unique.

The Food of Puglia

Bari
Bari

One of the reasons Puglia wines are so enjoyable is their natural compatibility with food.

Puglian cuisine is simple, fresh, and deeply rooted in local traditions.

Popular ingredients include:

  • Olive oil

  • Fresh seafood

  • Burrata cheese

  • Handmade pasta

  • Lamb

  • Seasonal vegetables

These ingredients create dishes that pair beautifully with local wines.

Burrata and Primitivo

The creamy richness of burrata balances the ripe fruit and gentle spice of Primitivo.

Orecchiette with Sausage

This traditional Puglian pasta dish is a perfect match for Negroamaro.

Grilled Lamb

The structure and depth of Puglia's red wines complement grilled meats exceptionally well.

Beyond Wine: The Beauty of Puglia

Monopoli
Monopoli

Puglia is much more than a wine destination.

Visitors can explore:

  • The famous trulli houses of Alberobello

  • The whitewashed streets of Ostuni

  • The dramatic cliffs of Polignano a Mare

  • Ancient olive groves that are centuries old

  • Beautiful coastal towns along both seas

Unlike some of Italy's more crowded destinations, Puglia still offers an authentic glimpse into traditional Italian life.

It is a place where meals are enjoyed slowly, conversations last for hours

and hospitality remains a way of life.
