Ca’ del Bosco: The Soul of Franciacorta

Where Italy Found Its Sparkling Identity

When people think of the world's greatest sparkling wines, Champagne naturally comes to mind. Yet, tucked between the southern shores of Lake Iseo and the rolling morainic hills of Lombardy lies a region that has quietly become Italy's benchmark for traditional-method sparkling wine: Franciacorta.

Here, every bottle is crafted using the Metodo Classico (the same bottle-fermentation process used in Champagne), but expresses an unmistakably Italian personality, vibrant, elegant and deeply connected to its landscape.

Among all the names that have shaped Franciacorta, none has had a greater

influence than Ca' del Bosco.

A Vision Born in the Woods

The story begins in the mid-1960s when Annamaria Clementi purchased a small country house surrounded by chestnut woods in Erbusco. The estate was known as Ca' del Bosco, meaning "House in the Woods."

Her son, Maurizio Zanella, was fascinated by wine from an early age. After studying the great vineyards of Burgundy and Champagne, he returned home with a bold dream:

To prove that Italy could produce sparkling wines capable of standing alongside the world's finest.

At a time when few believed Franciacorta had such potential, Zanella invested in vineyard quality, underground cellars, precision viticulture and uncompromising craftsmanship. His vision helped transform an unknown agricultural area into Italy's most prestigious sparkling wine appellation.

Today, Maurizio Zanella is widely recognized as one of the pioneers who elevated Franciacorta onto the international stage.

The Ca' del Bosco Method

A giant white rhinoceros sculpture hangs from the ceiling in an industrial brewery room with metal tanks and scaffolding.
The suspended rhinoceros symbolizes 'the weight of suspended time'—a tribute to the patience and dedication required to craft every bottle of Ca' del Bosco Franciacorta."

Innovation has always defined Ca' del Bosco.

Rather than simply following tradition, Zanella constantly asked how every step could be improved while respecting the fruit.

Among the winery's signature practices are:

  1. Hand harvesting every bunch.

  2. Washing and carefully drying each cluster before pressing.

  3. Selecting only the finest free-run juice.

  4. Gentle gravity-flow movement of wines to preserve purity.

  5. Long aging on the lees to develop complexity and finesse.

  6. Certified organic viticulture throughout the estate.

This meticulous attention to detail has become known simply as

The Ca' del Bosco Method, a philosophy where technology serves nature

rather than replacing it.

Franciacorta: Italy's Metodo Classico Masterpiece

Unlike most sparkling wines, Franciacorta is never produced through tank fermentation.

Every bottle undergoes:

  • A second fermentation inside the bottle.

  • Extended aging on its lees.

  • Careful riddling and disgorgement.

  • Strict DOCG regulations among the most demanding in Italy.

The result is remarkable finesse:

  • exceptionally fine bubbles

  • creamy texture

  • vibrant acidity

  • remarkable aging potential

While Champagne remains the historical reference, Franciacorta expresses its own identity through warmer sunshine, ripe fruit and unmistakable Italian elegance.

The Ultimate Expression of Ca' del Bosco

The winery's flagship wine bears the name of Annamaria Clementi, the woman whose purchase of a small farmhouse unknowingly launched one of Italy's greatest wine stories.

Produced only in exceptional vintages, Annamaria Clementi 2016 represents the pinnacle of Ca' del Bosco.

Chardonnay, Pinot Nero and Pinot Bianco, only the finest fruit from carefully selected vineyards is used.

  • brioche

  • chalk

  • pastry cream
